What you should know about the risks of tooth gems! Tooth gems are tiny jewels attached to teeth with adhesive that can pose several dangers to your oral health. They can cause:
  • Plaque buildup: The area under the gem can be difficult to clean, which can cause the buildup of plaque and bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss.
  • Enamel damage: The “cleansing gel” used to prepare the tooth for the gem attachment contains an acid that can damage and weaken your enamel, which is the protective outer layer of your teeth. Damaged enamel doesn’t regenerate.
  • Gum irritation: If placed too close to your gum-line, the gem can cause irritation or inflammation. This can eventually lead to gum recession, which can expose the roots of your teeth and, in some cases, increase the risk of decay and sensitivity.
  • Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to the material of the gem or the adhesive, which can cause discomfort or swelling.
  • Swallowing: If a tooth gem becomes loose, it could be swallowed. There is also a risk of ingesting contaminants from non-approved stones, metals, and chemical adhesive. Far worse, a dislodge gem could be aspirated into your lungs.
  • Chipping other teeth: The gems can chip other teeth if they come into contact with them.
  • Discoloration: Your teeth can become significantly discolored if you don’t practice proper oral care. This may require restorative dentistry to correct.
  • Bad breath: Due to the retention of food and bacteria trapped by the gems you can experience bad breath.

While tooth gems are trendy, there are risks involved. Whether applied by a professional or with a store bought do-at-home kit, consider the adverse possibilities before applying tooth gems.
