Tooth whitening is a common procedure done to whiten and brighten the appearance of your natural teeth. There are different types and systems that can be utilized during professional tooth whitening. Huntington Bay Dental is proud to offer the KöR Whitening System for many years with great results.

Most patients will typically use one of three different options for whitening. The first is called KöR Home. This allows the patient to whiten in the comfort of their own home with custom fit whitening trays and special whitening gel. Digital scans are taken of your teeth with our iTero scanner and sent to the KöR lab. This is all done digitally without traditional dental impressions. Once received at the lab, custom whitening trays are fabricated to exactly fit your mouth. During this time, patients will begin using Sensodyne toothpaste for 1-2 weeks prior to whitening. This helps significantly cut down on any sensitivity that can be expected.

When your trays are ready you will return to the office for a quick 30 minute appointment with your dental hygienist. We begin by showing you a video that explains the process.  Your trays are then tried in to make sure they have a perfect fit.  Then we will demonstrate how to properly add the whitening gel to your trays to maximize your whitening. On average, patients will wear these trays every night for 2 weeks. The trays can also be worn for “touch ups” as needed.

Some patients want a faster approach and opt to do our in-office whitening.  This is the same great KöR material but done in office. No impressions are necessary and no whitening trays are made.  The patient comes in for one 2-hour appointment with the dental hygienist. A special barrier is applied to protect your gums and a higher concentration of whitening gel is applied in 3 increments directly to your teeth by the dental hygienist.  You leave the office within 2 hours with a smile many shades brighter!

For certain patients a combination of whitening options is needed to achieve the wanted results. KöR Max uses both whitening trays at home and an in-office session. First, the patient whitens at home for 2 weeks with their custom made trays. Then an in-office whitening appointment is done for an added boost. This system is recommended if the patient has a significant amount of tooth discoloration or is preparing their teeth for a large cosmetic procedure.

Before doing any whitening it is recommended to have a hygiene treatment shortly before. Teeth whiten best when any plaque or tartar is removed prior. Patients also need to have an evaluation completed by their dentist or dental hygienist to make sure they are a candidate for whitening.  It is important to note that existing dental work such as fillings, bondings, crowns, bridges, or veneers will NOT whiten. The procedure only works on natural teeth. If you have any of these types of restorations, there is the potential that you may want to replace them if your natural teeth around them brighten significantly and no longer match.

If you are interested in any whitening we invite you to schedule an appointment with one of our dental hygienists to review your options. We look forward to helping you achieve your dreams of a whiter, brighter smile!
